The FoodNet annual publication on the incidence and trends of infection with pathogens transmitted commonly through food was published in the April 18, 2014 edition of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The report summarizes data collected by FoodNet sites in 2013 and describes changes in incidence since 2006. This report shows limited progress is being made in efforts to reduce the incidence of foodborne illnesses and that these illnesses continue to be an important, but preventable, public health problem. Also highlighted in the report is the potential impact of new, culture-independent diagnostic testing on the ability of public health to identify cases, monitor trends, detect outbreaks and characterize pathogens.
