FoodNet Data in April 18th MMWR

The FoodNet annual publication on the incidence and trends of infection with pathogens transmitted commonly through food was published in the April  18, 2014 edition of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The report summarizes data collected by FoodNet sites in 2013 and describes changes in incidence since 2006. This report shows limited progress is being made in efforts to reduce the incidence of foodborne illnesses and that these illnesses continue to be an important, but preventable, public health problem. HPV News

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Resources for both the public and providers are available on the National Cervical Cancer Coalition website. The Virtual Immunization Communication Network is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 (2:00 pm ET/ 11:00 am PT) which will focus on HPV vaccine and the important role that healthcare providers and public health communicators have in improving HPV vaccination rates among adolescents.

CDC’s Top Ten

Under Surveillance XIII Wrap-up

On Tuesday, November 19, 2013, the California Emerging Infections Program hosted its 13th annual Under Surveillance symposium at the Elihu Harris Staff Office Building in downtown Oakland. Laboratorians, public health staff, nurses, and many other collaborators in the Bay Area and beyond attended this event. This year’s symposium set an all-time record for enrollment and attendance–over 220 registered for the event and approximately 180 attended. Speaker topics included emerging respiratory viruses, electronic communicable disease reporting, Valley Fever, and an update about human papillomavirus (HPV).
